The weather is heating up practically everywhere. Whether you live in South Florida’s subtropical climate or northern Minnesota’s moderate midwestern weather patterns, summertime brings with it sunshine and humidity. While central air conditioning is a nice luxury, it’s not cheap. Installation is expensive and complicated. What’s more, even if you already have a central air conditioning unit installed in your home, running it can cost a fortune. Increasing utility costs have made running central air quite the costly proposition as of late. That’s why we think shopping around for a more efficient way to stay cool might be a good idea this summer.

One of the tried-and-true methods of cooling off without spending an arm and a leg has always been to use a window air conditioner. These units have been lifesavers for those in townhouses and apartments for decades. Many times, you don’t have the option to install ductwork and a large central unit outside your home, so a window AC unit is your best option. However, even if you’re able to install central air conditioning, or even if you already have it, a window unit might be the best fit to give you the cooling power you want while holding on to the money that you need. The good news is that right now, Walmart is having a massive summer sale that includes deals on Window AC units. Prices start at just $139, making it a great time to invest without breaking the bank. 

What is a window AC unit?

Window air conditioners are electric cooling systems that can be mounted in an open window in your home. They cool by pulling warm air in, and then passing it over cold coils that are filled with liquid refrigerant. The unit then feeds the cold air into the room, thereby lowering the ambient temperature. The heat that’s extracted through this process is then pushed back out of the unit on the back end, which faces the outside of the home. It’s an efficient way to cool spaces without the need for an extensive installation process that includes ductwork and complex electrical wiring.

Another benefit of window units over similar floor-based portable units has to do with space. If you use a rolling floor-based portable air conditioner, which works similarly to a window unit, you’ll have to find a spot for it on the floor. Window units have the benefit of taking up no floor space whatsoever in the room, making them ideal for smaller rooms where there isn’t much square footage to spare. 

Window AC units are also less cost-prohibitive than central air. That’s because they’re intended to cool a single room at a time. For example, a central air conditioning unit will cool an entire three-bedroom home at once, even if there’s only one person at home in their bedroom. On the other hand, that same person could simply cool the room they’re in using a window AC unit, and save an incredible amount of electricity over the person in the first scenario. This can substantially lower your electricity bill over time. 

Small window AC units

Small AC units for the window typically operate with up to roughly 6,000 BTU. They can cool an area of about 250 square feet comfortably. This makes them great for medium-sized bedrooms or home offices. A unit of this size will use the minimum amount of electricity, making it the most cost-effective option of all three sizes.

Medium window AC units

Medium-sized units range from about 7,000 BTUs to 9,000 BTUs. These air conditioners can cool a space of approximately 450 square feet. That’s generally the size of a typical living room. If you get a window AC unit of this size, then you can expect to use it to cool off your living space, making relaxing and watching TV far more comfortable than it might be using simply a ceiling fan.

Large window AC units

The largest category of window air conditioning units utilizes as much as 18,000 BTUs or more. Large units like this can cool up to 700 square feet or more. While they come with more cooling power, they also pull far more electricity, so keep that in mind when looking for your chosen AC. If you buy a window AC unit of this size, then you’re likely hoping to cool a large percentage of a small home. That said, a large window AC can still be more budget-friendly than a permanent central air conditioner.
